Disability: Diagnosis, transition support and the journey through higher education - 12 December 2007

Disability Diagnosis

The conference at the Royal Victoria Holiday Inn, Sheffield focussed on the learning journey to higher education of people with disabilities. This journey starts with the recognition and diagnosis of disability, then organising the necessary support and assisting learners on their programmes of study.

The morning sessions were led by Jagdish Barn - a chartered educational psychologist and a director of Focus Psychology Ltd. Who led us through the processes of diagnosing dyslexia with speakers of other languages and gave a demonstration of instruments and techniques used.

The afternoon sessions gave voice to students with disabilities from the University of Sheffield and Sheffield Hallam University about their experiences prior to entering HE and during their time as HE students.

Finally, delegates heard of the steps which need to be taken to ensure all potential recipients of disabled student allowances get their entitlements from Sarah Cheetham, of the Sheffield Assessment Centre
