Welcome to the Aimhigher South Yorkshire Website
Aimhigher is a national organisation aiming to Widen Participation in Higher Education. It aims to tackle the root causes of non-participation in Higher Education by certain identified groups and aims to improve aspirations to Higher Education, raise attainment, improve vocational progression, and ultimately increase participation of under-represented groups at university.
Aimhigher activities take place nationally, within 45 local areas in England. Aimhigher South Yorkshire covers one of these local areas - covering Sheffield, Barnsley, Doncaster and Rotherham. Aimhigher South Yorkshire seeks to break down barriers to Higher Education, ensuring that young people in South Yorkshire who have the capability for university learning feel that this is an option that is available to them. Barriers to higher education can come from a variety of sources: they may be from family and friends, the school or at the community where the young person lives. Aimhigher assists by facilitating provision of advice and guidance about the HE experience, choice, the application process and available student support.
Aimhigher is also active in supporting initiatives that drive up attainment - a crucial issue in giving young people the best chance of securing a university place.

Strategic Plans
The Strategic Plan for Aimhigher South Yorkshire for the period 2008-11 has now been submitted and approved by the regional partnership Board. The plan contains much that is continuing from the current period, such as mentoring schemes, campus visits, roadshows, theatre group presentations, schools and college based activities and the like. There will be development of some activities which have featured only marginally in South Yorkshire. These include more work with primary schools through the national Aimhigher 'Professor Fluffy' programme; more emphasis on outreach work with disabled learners; work on academic transition; and more support for information, advice and guidance, including higher education finance.
The governance of Aimhigher will be through a new Area Partnership Committee which will include representatives from University Centre Barnsley, Higher Futures (the Lifelong Learning Network) and HE in FE Colleges in addition to current members of the Area Steering Group.
