Disability guidance

Many people are often anxious about what language to use regarding disabled people. Action on Access have published the ‘Rough Guide to Disability’ to help practitioners through this.

Top tips:

  • As a general rule it is better to say, "a person with a disability" or "a disabled person", rather than "the disabled".

  • School pupils are referred to as having special educational needs (SEN).

  • In further education students are referred to as learners with learning difficulties and/or disabilities (LLDD) or disabled learners.

  • In higher education students are normally referred to as disabled students.
