What is Aimhigher?

Aimhigher aims to widen participation in higher education by raising the awareness, aspirations and attainment of young people from under-represented groups. It is a national programme run by the Higher Education Funding Council for England with support from the Department for Business, Innovation & Skills.

As part of a network of projects nationwide, Aimhigher Derbyshire is helping schools and colleges in the county to ensure their students fulfil their true potential and make the most of the educational opportunities available to them.

The Aimhigher Derbyshire team offers a wide-ranging portfolio of activities to inspire and motivate students who have the potential to succeed in higher education but who may be under-achieving, undecided or lacking in confidence. It also provides extensive information, advice and guidance to potential students, their teachers and their families.

Around 30 Derbyshire schools and over 2,000 young people now take part regularly in Aimhigher activities ranging from university visits and summer schools to masterclasses and mentoring programmes. In addition, the Aimhigher team works closely with target groups in the county's further education colleges.
