Events
We run a wide variety of events throughout the year. You can find out more about our regular events below. You can also view our recent and upcoming events.
Aimhigher… Year 9 and Beyond
This is our action-packed event which launches the Aimhigher Derbyshire programme with Year 9 pupils.
Learners attend a carousel of activities which encourage them to reflect both on the choices they must make about their subjects in Year 10 and 11, and on the options available to them in the future. They also get the chance to meet our student mentors.
Workshops include:
The Olympic Challenge – learners work in teams to draw up their dream teams of graduate professions. They must weigh up the skills and qualifications needed to stage a global event.
Hobbies, Courses, Careers – learners reflect on their own skills and qualities, and how their interests both in and out of school can shape their future plans.
The Promise – An exciting and motivational performance by the Zip Theatre focusing on the benefits of continuing in education.
The Aimhigher Roadshow
The Aimhigher Roadshow travels to schools around the country to promote the benefits and dispel the myths about Higher Education.
Through an informative and fast-paced presentation by a recent graduate, and interactive DVDs, learners have the chance to find out more about the options available to them in the future.
University Experience Day
Aimhigher learners in Year 9 or 10 have the opportunity to spend a day at the University of Derby, to experience what it is really like to be a student.
Through a range of interactive games and activities, learners have the chance to meet our undergraduate mentors and find out more about Higher Education.
With a tour round the campus, and a subject showcase session delivered by a university lecturer, this is a real day in the life of a student!
University Experience Days are arranged with each school and are held throughout the year.
Study Skills
As exams and coursework deadlines come ever closer, this event for Year 11 learners gives a real boost.
The day is based around three sessions:
• Time Management – focusing on simple and effective time management and revision planning skills
• Memory Techniques – based around a range of techniques that help to store information in your long-term memory.
• Organising Information – focussing on skills needed to answer questions accurately and to create useful revision notes.
To follow-up, learners look at techniques to motivate themselves and to focus on positive thinking.
Study Skills days are arranged with each school and are held throughout the year.
Sixth Form Transition Event
The change from school to sixth form or college can be a difficult time. This event gives Year 12 Level 3 learners the opportunity to learn from the experiences of undergraduate students.
The event includes three sessions, each delivered by a student mentor, focussing on different aspects of independent study. These skills are important at sixth form or college, and crucial as learners progress to university or employment.
Sixth Form Transition Events are arranged with each school and are held throughout the autumn term.
Parents’ Evenings
Aimhigher Derbyshire staff and student mentors regularly attend parents’ evenings and information events at the schools we work with. We’re always keen to speak to learners, parents and teachers about Higher Education, and to answer any questions you may have.
Summer Schools
Every year, Aimhigher Derbyshire holds Summer Schools as part of a range of similar events across the region.
These residential trips give an in depth experience of university life, offering participants the chance to stay in Halls of Residence and attend taster sessions in a chosen subject area.
