Societies

At college you will find many societies that cater for a variety of student interests.

Some examples of these are:

  • Sport – your college may have a football, rugby, running, swimming, table tennis or darts team.
  • Music – there’s usually the opportunity to play an instrument, join a classical, pop or rock group.
  • Art – if you’re an artist, you’ll find trips to art galleries or even trips abroad.
  • Debating – this is a traditional activity. It’s still done at some colleges and it’s good for your portfolio.
  • Subject interest groups – if you’re really dedicated to your subject, you’ll find others who want to do extra activities.
  • Career-related activities – - for example, joining a Law society, assisting in schools or doing voluntary work

Start your own! If you’re very enterprising and keen, you might want to start a college society. You’ll get lots of encouragement from your tutors and it could be really good fun. Your society may continue for years after you’ve left.
